Why 16 and over
You have to be 16 to keep a collection here. Nobody made us draw that line, and drawing it costs us accounts we would otherwise have. Here is the reasoning, so you can decide what you think of it.
The line
mySpoils is for people of 16and over. There is no younger tier, and no version of this with a parent's permission. If you are under 16, come back when you are not: your collection will be worth more then anyway.
Why here, and why that number
Strictly, this is not social media. It is a private archive of things you have done, with a public profile you can turn on if you want one. Nothing in law currently obliges an archive like this to set an age at all.
But the honest description of what we are building is a place where you show people what you have lived through, and where other people can see it and compare. That is close enough to the thing that is hard on young teenagers that we would rather not find out where the edge is.
16 is the number the European Parliament asked for in November 2025. It is not law and may never be, and every country that has legislated since has picked something slightly different. Rather than wait to be told, we took the strictest of the serious proposals, so that whichever one lands we do not have to move.
What it costs us
Accounts, first. Then the traffic those accounts would have brought, and eventually the money. For a product this young, signups are the only number that means anything, and this rules out a group of people who join things enthusiastically.
We are saying that plainly because it is the only part of this worth trusting. Any product can say it cares about young people. Turning away the people is a thing you can check.
What we are not claiming
We are not claiming that a fifteen-year-old cannot handle a list of films. We are not claiming to have measured any harm, or that our line is the right one for anybody else's product. And we are not verifying anybody's age with a document, which would mean asking every adult here for identification to catch a few people who typed the wrong year: a worse trade, made with somebody else's privacy.
What we are claiming is narrow. Those years are formative and they do not come back, and we would rather give up the accounts than take some of that time.
If you are under 16 and already here
The requirement was added after the first accounts were made. If yours is one of them, write to us and we will hold the collection rather than delete it, so nothing you logged is lost when you come back.
